NFBC Announces Series of Anniversary Commemorations

LEWISTON, NY/QUEENSTON, ON – Today the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC) announced a series of upcoming commemorative activities in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Commission and the 50th Anniversary of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge span.

“To properly acknowledge and pay tribute to 75 years of effective, bi-national service to the Western New York and Southern Ontario regions, the Commission has a series of exciting events and activities planned for the second-half of 2013,” said NFBC Chairperson Thomas G. Pryce.

“This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, which is an important trade and tourism corridor for our local areas and the broader Canada – United States economic relationship,” said NFBC Vice Chairperson Ernest K. Smith.

Commemorative activities commence with the release of an official webpage (www.niagarafallsbridges75.com), as well as anniversary logos, downloadable Lewiston-Queenston Bridge 50th Anniversary poster art, weekly “Did You Know? Interesting Facts!” advisories, and updated NFBC bridge and plaza facilities photos.

In the coming months the celebration will feature 75th/50th Anniversary t-shirts (available for purchase soon through the www.niagarafallsbridges75.com webpage) in support of select regional food banks, a new Niagara bridge spans video montage, the unveiling of a Lewiston-Queenston Bridge oil-painting, an enhanced public fireworks display coordinated through the Niagara Parks Commission, educational outreach to local school districts, sharing of historic images, commemorative displays at participating Duty Free stores, print media inserts and advertisements, formal dignitary commendations, and other special events.

“2013 is an important year in the history of the NFBC and one that we wish to celebrate in a thoughtful and memorable manner,” continued Chairperson Pryce.

“This commemoration is really a chance for us all to step back and reflect on the role of the Commission and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge in connecting the world’s two greatest democracies both physically and economically, as well as culturally,” concluded Vice Chairperson Smith.

About the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission:

A Joint Resolution of the 1938 U.S. Congressional Third Session created the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. The Extra Provincial Corporations Act of the Province of Ontario, Canada licenses the NFBC. Canada and the U.S. are equally represented on the NFBC by an eight-member Board of Commissioners.  Initially established to finance, construct and operate the Rainbow Bridge, the Commission proved sufficiently efficient and effective to assume responsibilities for the Whirlpool Rapids (Lower) and Lewiston-Queenston Bridges.  The NFBC builds and maintains all facilities for Customs and Immigration functions on both sides of the international border. The NFBC is self supportive, largely through user fees (tolls) and private-sector tenant leases. NFBC is federally chartered to conduct international commercial financial transactions and issue federal (U.S.) tax-exempt bonds.
